DID YOU KNOW...

PLAY

Play is an incredibly important part of your dogs physical and mental wellbeing, whether that be playing with their humans or their canine or feline companions.  There have been studies that show a lack of play can have a correlation with some behavioural issues such as anxiety or pulling on the lead and whining (of course there may be other reasons for these behavioural issues to).  Play needs to be appropriate and the dog needs to feel comfortable at all times.  So take some time out of your day to play with your dog, they will love you for it!

THE DOG'S NOSE

Scent is your dogs super power!  A dog has around 220 million receptor cells in it's nose compared to the measly 5 million us humans have.  There has even been research to suggest that a dog can sense our mood by the scent of the chemosignals we are giving off at that particular moment in time!  This could explain why your dog always comes and rests his head on your lap when you're sad or why they get excited when you're happy.  The next time your feeling stressed or sad take note of how your dog is behaving, they might just surprise you!

DO DOGS SWEAT....?

The short answer is yes!  However they don't sweat like their human companions, they only sweat through their paws.  Unlike us humans it is not their primary cooling system, they prefer to pant. As a general rule a healthy dog will inhale around 15-40 times a minute, as the dogs heart rate rises, its respiratory rate also rises to anything up to 400 inhalations a minute!  As the cooler air from the outside passes over the tongue it causes the moisture and saliva to evaporate, cooling down the tongue and circulating these cooler molecules throughout the body, therefore cooling the body from the inside out, pretty cool eh?  With the summer very much on its way, heat stroke is an important consideration to make when exercising your dog.  Some good ways to avoid this is to walk your dog at the cooler times of the day (early morning/late evening), ensure fresh water is always available and you could even make dog friendly ice pops for them to munch on during the hottest part of the day!
